With Kaide

Mirko Maffioli nasce in un contesto profondamente artistico, da madre giapponese e padre italiano. Fin dall'infanzia si avvicina alla musica e allo studio del pianoforte, seguito dalla madre, insegnante di canto lirico e di pianoforte. Il padre, designer, lo cresce in un ambiente ricco di arte, tra quadri e modellismo, trasmettendogli il gusto per l'equilibrio estetico e per la raffinatezza.

Un riferimento decisivo arriva dal fratello maggiore, tatuatore per oltre vent'anni e in seguito character designer per videogiochi e illustratore per importanti case produttrici di giochi da tavolo. Il primo contatto diretto con la street art avviene proprio grazie al suo ambiente: gli amici più grandi del fratello, graffitari e studenti del liceo artistico, introducono Mirko a un linguaggio visivo che lo affascina in modo definitivo.

Da quel momento, la cultura del graffiti diventa una matrice costante del suo sguardo, in particolare nell'uso della gamma cromatica. Un'altra influenza fondamentale è la cultura visiva giapponese: anime e cinema degli anni '80 e '90, assimilati fin da giovane, lasciano un'impronta chiara sul suo immaginario. La possibilità di esplorare grandi metropoli, soprattutto Tokyo, amplia ulteriormente la sua visione fotografica.

La sua fotografia è prevalentemente notturna: racconta piccoli frammenti di vita metropolitana con un taglio cinematografico, ruvido ma naturale, vicino alla sensibilità della pellicola. Il colore, intenso e stratificato, resta la sua firma visiva più riconoscibile.

Il nome Kaide deriva da un gioco di parole tra il giapponese e l’italiano: “Kai” (海) significa “mare” in giapponese, mentre “de” richiama la preposizione italiana “di”. Insieme evocano l’idea di “dal mare” o “del mare”, un omaggio alle radici multiculturali di Mirko e al senso di viaggio, apertura e incontro tra mondi diversi che caratterizza sia la sua vita che la sua fotografia. Ma Kaide ha anche una forte rilevanza affettiva: poco dopo la scomparsa del suo amatissimo nonno giapponese, Mirko scoprì da sua madre che Kaide era il quinto fratello minore del nonno. Poco prima di lasciarlo, il nonno gli accarezzò il mento e lo chiamò proprio con quel nome, lasciandogli un ricordo indelebile. “Kaide” è quindi una firma che racchiude la sua identità, il suo percorso, la sua visione e un legame profondo con la sua storia familiare.

Mirko Maffioli was born into an artistic environment, to a Japanese mother and an Italian father. From early childhood, he was introduced to music and began studying piano under his mother, who taught both opera singing and piano. His father, a designer, raised him in a home filled with art, paintings, and model making, shaping his sense of beauty and refinement.

A major source of inspiration came from his older brother, a tattoo artist for more than twenty years, later a character designer for video games and an illustrator for leading board game publishers. Mirko's first direct approach to street art came through that same circle: his brother's older friends, graffiti writers and art-school students, introduced him to a visual language that left a lasting mark.

From that point on, graffiti culture became a constant influence in his work, especially in his use of color. Another key influence is Japanese visual culture: anime and films from the 1980s and 1990s, absorbed early in life, still shape his aesthetic language. The opportunity to explore major cities, especially Tokyo, further expanded his photographic vision.

His photography is primarily nocturnal: small fragments of metropolitan life are framed with a gritty yet natural cinematic sensibility, often close to the visual feel of film photography. Rich, layered color remains one of his most distinctive signatures.

The name Kaide comes from a play on words between Japanese and Italian: “Kai” (海) means “sea” in Japanese, while “de” recalls the Italian preposition “di” (“of”). Together, they evoke the idea of “from the sea” or “of the sea”—a tribute to Mirko’s multicultural roots and to the sense of journey, openness, and meeting of different worlds that defines both his life and his photography. But Kaide also carries a deeply personal meaning: just a few days before parting, his beloved Japanese grandfather gently touched Mirko’s face and called him by that name, leaving an unforgettable memory. Only after his grandfather’s passing did Mirko, asking his mother, discover that Kaide was his grandfather’s fifth younger brother. “Kaide” thus becomes a signature that holds identity, journey, and a special bond with his family’s story.

ミルコ・マッフィオーリは、日本人の母とイタリア人の父のもと、芸術に囲まれた環境で育ちました。幼少期から音楽に親しみ、オペラ歌唱とピアノを教える母の指導のもとでピアノを学び始めます。デザイナーである父の影響により、絵画や模型に満ちた家庭の中で、美しさと洗練への感覚を育んでいきました。

その後の大きな手本となったのは兄の存在です。兄は20年以上にわたりタトゥーアーティストとして活動し、その後はゲーム業界でキャラクターデザインを手がけ、主要なボードゲーム出版社のイラスト制作にも携わってきました。ミルコがストリートアートに直接触れた最初のきっかけも、この兄の周囲にいた年上の友人たちでした。グラフィティライターや美術高校の学生たちとの出会いが、彼の視覚言語を決定づけました。

それ以来、グラフィティ文化は彼の作品に継続的な影響を与え、とりわけ色彩設計に強く表れています。さらに、日本の映像文化も重要な要素です。幼い頃から親しんだ80〜90年代のアニメや映画は、現在の写真表現にもはっきりと反映されています。とくに東京をはじめとする大都市を実際に歩き、撮影できた経験が、彼の視野を大きく広げました。

彼の写真は主に夜の都市を舞台にしています。大都市に生まれる一瞬の生活の断片を、荒さと自然さを併せ持つシネマティックな視点で捉え、フィルム的な質感に近い空気感へと昇華させます。重層的で力強い色彩は、彼の写真を特徴づける最も明確な署名のひとつです。

「Kaide」という名前は、日本語とイタリア語の言葉遊びから生まれました。「Kai」（海）は日本語で「海」を意味し、「de」はイタリア語の前置詞「di」（〜の）を連想させます。合わせることで「海から」や「海の」というイメージが生まれ、ミルコの多文化的なルーツや、旅・開かれた心・異なる世界の出会いという、彼の人生と写真に共通するテーマへのオマージュとなっています。 さらに「Kaide」には深い個人的な意味もあります。祖父が亡くなる数日前、最愛の祖父はミルコの顔を優しく撫でながら、その名前で呼びました。祖父の死後、母に尋ねて初めて、Kaideが祖父の五番目の弟だったことを知ります。「Kaide」は、彼のアイデンティティと歩み、そして家族の物語と特別な絆を象徴するサインです。
